Vikram Deb Autonomous College, Jeypore was established in 1947 as "JEYPORE COLLEGE"
by the Government of Odisha with land and buildings donated by the King of Jeypore, Rajarshi
Vikram Dev Verma. Sri K.M. Dwivedi joined the college as its first Principal on 06 July 1947.
The college began with only 49 students, 09 teachers and 20 boarders. As a tribute to the
monumental contributions of Rajarshi Vikram Dev Verma, the Govt. of Odisha renamed the
erstwhile "JEYPORE COLLEGE" as "VIKRAM DEB COLLEGE" in 1951. The statue of this
philanthropist king adorns the main gate and a central place of the main building.
The college was upgraded to a FISRT GRADE COLLEGE with under graduate classes in
science and humanities streams in 1961 and 1963 respectively. Honours teaching provisions
were made during the years 1968-73 and Post- Graduate teaching was first initiated in History in
1979 and other PG courses were added later on. At present the college has 19 UG and 15 PG
departments managed by 42 regular teachers and 70 Guest faculties for around 4000 students.
