A high-profile police raid on an illegal casino in Bangkok's Bang Sue district was foiled Sunday by residents who turned on the officers and pelted them with rocks, sticks and hot water.

The raid started when a group of plainclothes police officers entered the casino posing as customers. Gamblers inside the casino sensed the presence of the police and quickly blocked and fortified all the entrances to prevent backup from entering.

Police outside the building were then forced to enter the casino from the rooftop.
They climbed a nearby building and the roofs of neighbouring homes carrying ladders, ropes and rubber sheets.

They used the ladders to bridge the gaps between the roofs. While trying to enter the casino from the roof they were attacked by residents who threw objects and shouted at them.

Three officers were injured. A police major and a captain fell from the roof, while a senior sergeant major sustained a laceration to his head after being hit by a tile.

In the meantime riot police tried to approach the building but were also stopped by residents, giving the gamblers plenty of time to escape. Police were attacked with wooden sticks and rocks, fire extinguishers and hot water.

By the time they managed to enter the casino, all gamblers had fled with their cash and other evidence.

The secretary-general of the Anti-money Laundering Office said the property had been frozen pending a court order for its confiscation, but the owner of the property has still the right to use it.
