Difference Between an Air Compressor and Vacuum Pump

Описание к видео Difference Between an Air Compressor and Vacuum Pump

An air compressor vacuum pump uses similar technology. Yet, serves different functionality. Therefore, we have highlighted their differences and possible scope of applications to help you understand them better.

Construction
There are various types of air compressors such as scroll compressors, screw compressors, reciprocating compressors, and many more. Each of these compressors works differently. These variations are also available in the form of a vacuum pump. Even, you can turn your air compressor into a vacuum pump.

Working Principle
Air compressor vacuum pump using the same technology, such as a scroll air compressor and a scroll pump has similar components but opposite functionality. While a compressor fills a space, a vacuum pump empties a space. So, it’s more like, if components in the air compressor rotate clockwise, they rotate anti-clockwise in a vacuum pump.

Type of Material
A compressor can only work with gas or air. Because air compressor compresses things, and liquid is practically incompressible. However, any fluid (liquid or gas) can be transferred with a vacuum pump as it transfers the fluid without compressing it.

Storage System
Air compressors need a storage cylinder to store the gas or air it is compressing. While a vacuum pump doesn’t need a storage cylinder to operate. Because, some vacuum systems would collect air from the connected medium/cavity, and release it in the open air.

Flow Rate
The flow rate of an air compressor remains consistent over time. But, a vacuum pump’s flow rate starts to decrease with an increase in vacuum pressure.

Capacity
The capacity of an air compressor is based on the volume of air it can compress, typically expressed in cubic feet per minute (cfm). While a vacuum pump’s capacity is based on the pressure or vacuum it can achieve, typically expressed in mbars.

Can I Turn an Air Compressor into a Vacuum Pump?
Yes, it is possible to convert an air compressor into a vacuum pump. Although they have different functionality, their internal parts and basic working principle is similar. You can use the air compressor as a vacuum pump by tweaking it a bit. Here are some basic steps required for this process:

Firstly, you have to disassemble the air compressor.
Then, you will find a cylinder inside, where you have to connect the vacuum hose to the intake of the cylinder.
But, be sure to seal the holes properly using epoxy or other effective sealants.
Also, you may have to create a hole in the outer casing to take out the vacuum hose.
Once done, reassemble the parts.
