Today I am crafting a Mandragora Root, made infamous by Pan's Labyrinth and, of course, Harry Potter. I was inspired by the mandrake root light from Pottery Barn and decided to try making my own using polymer clay. This is perfect to use as a prop decoration or even to put amongst your live plants for some added whimsey.

Historically, while it's believed that its cry could kill whoever hears it, the mandrake root was also thought to be part of a potion to help witches fly or talk to the devil. It's part of the nightshade family and therefor, is highly toxic.

The Pottery Barn mandrake retails for $99 (currently unavailable) and I spent about $30 on supplies I didn't already have and about 6 nonconsecutive hours to make.

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (I used 70% but apparently 90% is better)
Fairy lights
Fake moss
Modge Podge
Acrylic paint : black, burnt umber, green oxide and yellow
Armature wire
Aluminium foil
Hemp rope
Fake plant leaves
Glue
