NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTT DATA Japan to enable UPI (Unified Payments Interface) acceptance across Japanese merchants — marking UPI’s first-ever expansion into East Asia.

The collaboration will leverage NTT DATA’s CAFIS network, Japan’s largest card payment processing platform, to allow Indian travelers to pay by simply scanning QR codes using their existing UPI apps at NTT DATA–acquired merchant locations.

Leaders from both organizations described the partnership as a major step toward seamless, interoperable cross-border payments and a boost to Japan’s push for a cashless economy. The next phase will include joint assessments and pilot trials across merchant networks, as announced at the Global Fintech Fest 2025.

This move comes amid a surge in India–Japan travel.

In May 2025, Japan recorded 43,000 Indian visitors, the highest ever for a single month.

From January to May 2025, approximately 142,400 Indians visited Japan — a 39.6% year-on-year rise.

Between January and August 2025, over 208,000 Indian travelers arrived, marking a 36% increase from 2024.


The growing travel volume highlights the commercial need for familiar, real-time digital payment options abroad. With nearly 20 billion UPI transactions recorded in September 2025, India’s flagship payment system demonstrates its global scalability and readiness for international retail adoption — beginning with Japan.
