Improving Sensory Awareness with Johanna Montalvo

Johanna Montalvo is the Head Quality Coordinator for Caravela Coffee in North America, where she enjoys being a part of a link in the chain between the origin of coffee and consumers. But Johanna's introduction to specialty coffee began with an invitation to a "Brew Coffee At Home" class. While that class went beyond the basics for at-home brewing, it wasn't enough for Johanna, who was taken by the sensory experience that accompanied coffee. She immediately took every opportunity to learn more about coffee in her home country - Ecuador. When she moved to the US with her family, she created her own network of small roasters and cafe owners, where she provided sensory training to other passionate coffee people. She sees the sensory experience as a journey and a way of connecting to emotions, memories, and stories through a cup of coffee. Johanna wants to remind everyone to take a moment and be present.
