In the late 1990s, men’s tennis was at a crossroads. Initially, tennis was played on grass courts, but climate and cost made this difficult to maintain. Out of necessity, courts around the world started changing. And in turn, different styles of play began to emerge.

Certain players would dominate on certain courts, removing the spectacle.

But in 2001 Wimbledon made their courts slower, and in doing so made the game more entertaining.
