Broadcaster Andrew Neil told Andrew Marr that the democratic world needs 'American leadership' but expressed the 'unhappy prospect' of a battle between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, deeming the American election a ‘geriatric contest’.

Trump's landslide victory in the first presidential caucuses, held in Iowa on the 15th January, was called within just 30 minutes as supporters endured freezing temperatures to vote.

The former President's success in the first Republican state primary of the 2024 election year comes despite him facing several legal challenges which could complicate his bid to return to the White House.

It is the first stage of Mr Trump's bid to be selected as Republican candidate for November's election, and has widely been seen as an indicator of his likelihood of success.

Trump will face a months-long effort to secure the nomination for a third consecutive time.

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are Trump's most prominent primary rivals.

They both went head-to-head for a second-place finish in Iowa in a bid to get some momentum heading into future races.
