Here are the steps to buying a new shade.

To begin with, if you’re replacing a shade you’ll need a few dimensions:

• Top Width
• Bottom Width
• Slant (if applicable)
• Vertical Height

If you are looking for a new shade, a good rule of thumb is that the shade should be one-third the overall height.

And in general, the width of the shade should be two times the base width.

Some terminology is good to know.

The Fitter is the wire at the top of the shade that connects it to the lamp body.

Most Fitters are not interchangeable, so be sure to use a shade with the correct fitter for your lamp.

The Spider is the most common type of fitter for table and floor lamp shades. Spider fitters sit atop the lamp's harp (the u-shaped metal part of a lamp that fits around and protects the light bulb).

Clip-on Fitters are available for candelabra bulbs, which are commonly used on chandelier and for regular sized bulbs used on accent and table lamps.

The Uno Fitter sits directly on the light bulb socket. This style is most commonly used for specialty lamps.
