The ridges and hills also helped keep it under wraps and to provide safety by separating buildings from each other. Some of the plants have been decommissioned and torn down. The Oak Ridge national laboratory is a very important lab with one of the worlds fastest supercomputers . Oak Ridge has a population of 31,400 in Anderson county which has a population of 78,000. Oak Ridge is about 25 miles from downtown Knoxville.
