COL Bob Yuill was commissioned in the US Army in 1972 as a Distinguished Military Graduate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an Infantry Officer. After his initial assignment with the 25th Infantry Division he attended flight school and then assigned to the 101st Abn Div (AASLT) with the 4/77 Aerial Field Artillery/later redesignated to the 229th Attack Hel Bn. His positions included Platoon Commander B Co, 229th AHB, Bn S4, and XO B/229th AHB.

After the failure of the Desert One mission COL Yuill was recruited to assist with the planning for a second rescue mission with elements of Task Force 229th. After the release of the Iranian hostages and the merger of TF 158th and TF 229th he was selected to help establish the new 160th Avn Bn (Special Operations). After his work was completed establishing TF 160th he was reassigned to the US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) to provide critical National Command Authority support. Upon completing the Army Command and General Staff College he returned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Group and filled positions as the S4 and XO flying the MH-6 as his primary aircraft. With the establishment of the 160th Regiment he became the Regimental Deputy Commander until his departure to become a Squadron Commander at 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta. After completing his war college assignment at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) he was assigned to US Special Operations Command, Acquisition and Logistics Center/J4 until his retirement.

COL Yuill’s deployments/mission support within the period 1980-1995 within Regiment/SFOD-D included Honey Badger, Prime Chance, Mt Hope, Just Cause, Desert Storm, and Gothic Serpent.
