A German burn injury specialist is preparing to treat victims of the deadly New Year’s Eve fire in Switzerland that left over 100 people injured and dozens dead.

Prof. Frank Siemers, head of the Burn Injury Centre at Halle’s BG Clinic Bergmannstrost, told Reuters that while Switzerland has specialized centers, the number of seriously injured patients required some to be transferred to Germany.

“The best solution is to bring them very fast to the specialised centres because of circulation problems, risk of infection, and large burn areas,” said Siemers. Patients are being transported by air to ensure stabilization and emergency care.

Siemers added that treatment will include removing damaged skin, applying skin grafts, and long-term scar management, sometimes requiring years of follow-up care. Swiss officials warned that the death toll could rise as many remain in critical condition.
