The Great Indoors is a musical depiction of the pandemic, particularly having to stay inside during lockdown. The piece was composed for the Ledge Trio for a commission from Music at the Mission (in Fremont, California), supported by a grant from Intermusic SF.

The first movement, Going Home and Staying There, concerns the peculiar nature of how COVID-19 interrupted my own life, bringing our daughter home from college in March 2020; we loved having her home, of course, but not given the circumstances.

The second movement, Another Walk (Dog Encounter) describes the only outdoor activity our family could on, practically every day – walking our very small dog, Taffy. Taffy is a cross between a Yorkshire terrier and a chihuahua, and weighs about 10 pounds. Every time Taffy encounters another dog, she gets riled up and charges her enemy.

The last movement, Endemic, describes this disease which we now think will never go away, as a very brief ritornello that comes back several times in the piano.

More information about the music is in the video itself.

Performers:

Rhonda Bradetich: piccolo, c-flute, alto flute
