【維修札記 #10】

講到馬丁難按這件事並不是都市傳說。十把裡面可能有八把都要經歷過。我遇過20年以上的老琴沒磨過下枕，手感還是很好包邊也沒開過；也有遇過1月出廠3月就送來拆琴頸的全新高階琴。
判斷是否需要來份琴頸重置一般會是這樣的過程：

開始有感覺到難按
➡️ 轉琴頸鋼筋
➡️ 磨下枕
隔一陣子又變難按了
➡️ 再轉鋼筋打弦很嚴重
➡️ 再磨下枕快沒肉
此時你的選擇下剩
☑️ 磨低琴橋
☑️ 琴頸重置

前者快速有效維修費用較低，但面板結構改變且不可逆並可能導致一系列副作用。後者工時工錢偏高，但能顯著恢復原有的音色手感，經驗豐富的維修師可以做到幾乎無維修痕跡。

🔶 技術總結

琴頸重置唯一的風險就是set過頭，後仰太大導致下枕要做很高，會給弦與面板帶來很大的負擔，音色也會較生硬，如何拿捏平衡點需要清晰的維修思路與經驗來判斷。

It's no urban legend that Martin guitars can be difficult to play. In fact, 8 out of 10 of them may require neck reset. I've encountered 20-year-old Martin guitars that never had their saddle filed, yet still played smoothly with intact binding. On the other hand, I've seen brand-new, high-end Martin guitars sent in for neck resets just three months after manufacture.
Here's a typical process for determining if a neck reset is needed:

Feeling that the guitar is hard to play
➡️ Adjust the truss rod
➡️ Lower the saddle

After a while, it becomes hard to play again
➡️ Adjust the truss rod, resulting in severe fret buzz
➡️ Lower the saddle until there's barely any material left

At this point, your options are:
☑️ Lower the bridge
☑️ Neck reset

The former is quick, effective, and less expensive, but it alters the soundboard structure irreversibly and can cause a series of side effects. The latter requires more time and money, but it significantly restores the original tone and playability. An experienced repair luthier can do this with almost no visible signs of repair.

🔶 Summary

The only risk with a neck reset is overdoing it, which can result in excessive backbow and necessitate a very high nut. This puts a lot of stress on the strings and soundboard, making the tone tighter. Finding the right balance requires a clear repair strategy and experienced judgment.
