1. Early Life and Background

Born on January 21, 1933, in Belcourt (Algiers), Ali Khoudja—real name Mustapha Khoudja—grew up in a modest family. After his father’s early death, he left school to support his family and trained as a carpenter. A gifted athlete and natural leader, he became deeply aware of colonial injustices from an early age.
2. Military Service and Defection

In 1953, he was conscripted into the French army and trained in combat. However, the racial discrimination he witnessed strengthened his desire to resist. On October 17, 1955, he deserted his post in Algiers with weapons and ammunition, joining the National Liberation Army (ALN)—a bold act that marked his total commitment to Algeria’s freedom.
3. Role in the War of Independence

Khoudja became a key figure in Wilaya IV, where he founded a special commando unit in June 1956. Composed of highly trained fighters—many with experience in Indochina—his unit became a model of discipline and efficiency.
He led several major operations:

Hill 616 Operation (Dec 31, 1955): Destroyed a French military post near Algiers and captured weapons.

Djerrah Ambush (May 18, 1956): Caused heavy French casualties near Lakhdaria.

Attacks on Bordj El Kiffan: Targeted key military sites, spreading fear among French forces.

His daring tactics boosted morale among fighters and drew media attention in France, further exposing the reality of the colonial war.
4. Martyrdom and Legacy

On October 11, 1956, Ali Khoudja was killed in combat during a French ambush in Bordj El Kiffan, following a betrayal. He and his men fought bravely to the end. His martyrdom was a severe loss for the ALN, but his commando lived on as a symbol of elite resistance.

Ali Khoudja’s legacy is one of bravery, discipline, and inspiration. His life and sacrifice remain a powerful example for future generations, a reminder that conviction and courage can shape history.
