Classic TV Theme: 77 Sunset Strip (all versions + bonus)

Описание к видео Classic TV Theme: 77 Sunset Strip (all versions + bonus)

It's a shame that 77 Sunset Strip isn't available on DVD, streaming, or any other official platform. The show wasn't perfect, but to me it was always special. Most people think of two 77SS themes. But actually there are multiple variations of the classic finger-snapping tune from Mack David and Jerry Livingston, and variations in the visuals that accompanied it. The latter is true as well for the second, jazzy Bob Thompson theme that took over in season six (one of the few examples of changing a show's theme and BOTH versions are memorable). Here's a guide to the variations you will hear, followed by a special bonus:
• First two seasons used the same opening visuals, but the musical arrangement was touched up a bit for the second season (that's the one heard here). The closing theme was also differently arranged: a bit restrained in season one, more flamboyant in season two. We include examples of both.
• Season three brought Richard Long into the opening sequence; some minor changes in the closer.
• Season four moved the opening inside the office, with Kookie now having his own office (small though it may have been) and JR Hale the new carhop shows up too. Same opening used in season five but the end theme is now mostly instrumental.
• Season six is a radical change. Jack Webb is often blamed for the huge revamp of the series but there is reason to believe this is what the head office wanted and he just remade the show as best as he could under those circumstances. The big, brassy theme with hints of film noir was Bob Thompson's 'New Sunset', and in its own way it's right up there with the original. Two versions are presented: the first was filmed in LA's legendary Bradbury Building, while a revised sequence shows Stu Bailey walking down the street, possibly necessitated by rights to use the Bradbury location having expired.
