Dashrath Manjhi (1934–2007), known as “The Mountain Man,” was an Indian laborer from Gehlaur village in Bihar.

In 1959, his pregnant wife, Falguni Devi, died after she was injured and couldn’t get medical help in time — because a massive mountain blocked the shortest path to the nearest hospital. Devastated, Manjhi vowed no one else should suffer like that. With just a hammer and chisel, he worked alone for 22 years (1960–1982) to carve a road through the mountain.

The road he built was about 110 meters long, 9.1 meters wide, and 7.6 meters deep in places — cutting the distance from his village to the town from 55 km to about 15 km. It gave people easier access to doctors, schools, and markets.

Though people first called him “mad,” he became a local hero — and his path is still used today.

Dashrath Manjhi’s story shows how love and loss can fuel a sense of purpose so strong it moves mountains.
