How to Replace a Failed Tailgate Latch Lock Mechanism on a Mercedes-Benz W164 / X164

In this video I am showing you how to replace a failed or failing trunk latch on a ML W164 and GL X164 Mercedes Benz. The process and the latch is identical regardless if you have the base model with just the soft-close function or a vehicle that is speced out the automatic opening and closing tailgate.

Usually what happens with these latches is that the soft close mechanism inside of them fails, thus forcing the owner to slam the trunk closed. While this is a workaround for the issue and will get you by for some time, eventually the latch will fail completely and the tailgate will no longer stay closed. Therefore it is a good option to just go ahead and replace the failed latch without postponing this too much. OE part number for the latch is A164 740 03 35. While the price for a new latch varies, depending on whether you order an Ebay special or buy one directly from Mercedesl. That being said, my advice is to get one that is from a reputable brand and is built to the OE standards.
