I’ve sent over 2500 parcels since 2015 and so far, touch wood, I’ve only ever had about 6-7 real breakages when shipping pots overseas as far as Japan, Australia, Hong Kong or even Tierra del Fuego on the southern tip of Argentina. As long as you wrap the pots carefully, they should be fine but there’ll always be some breakage, there’s simply nothing you can do to avoid it. Although the most irritating one lately was a lovely tall stepped jar. I wrapped it carefully so that it was in the very middle of the parcel, surrounded by packaging chips and layers of padding, unfortunately it was chosen for inspection on the other end and lovely Canda Border Service agents slashed the swaddled pot open, (to peek inside), only to repack the vessel with the ceramic left directing touching the internal wall of the box, which means it was then destined to smash.

I use a mixture of materials for my wrapping and they change as the year goes by, depending on what I can get, ultimately, it’s the principle of how you wrap that’s important, not so much the materials themselves.

The most important part is to ensure that there’s nothing inside the parcel that’s rattling around. You need the wrapped pots to stay snugly in the centre away from the box’s walls, that’s the key, you need space around the pot to absorb any impacts, drops or kicks…

I’ll be wrapping pots solidly for a week from Monday onward, so this was a good warm up.
