Today in Nad’s Home Tools, we will breathe new life into an out-of-order 50-watt COB (Chip on Board) LED light that would otherwise go into the landfill. This kind of LED light is a powerful and efficient lighting solution used both indoors and outdoors as floodlights, street lights, workshop lights, grow lights, DIY projector, etc.
The 50W COB LED Chip is the core of your light and the “Edison cap” refers to the iconic screw-in bulb base. COB has multiple LED chips mounted closely on a single substrate.
A Heat Sink is required for such a LED light as COB LEDs generate significant heat, so a proper aluminum heat sink is essential. Without adequate heat dissipation, the light will quickly overheat and burn out. The larger the heat sink, the better it dissipates heat. You'll need a substantial aluminum heat sink. To complete this task, we also needed a soldering iron, wire strippers, screwdrivers and drill for the heat sink.
Apply a thin, even layer of heat sink paste to the back of the COB LED or the surface of the heat sink where the COB will be mounted. Carefully place the COB LED onto the heat sink to firmly attach the COB to the heat sink. This ensures good contact for heat transfer thereby their longevity and performance.
And Voila! You have a new light!
