In the summer of 1970, deep in the mountains of South Vietnam’s A Shau Valley, Firebase Ripcord became the site of one of the Vietnam War’s most brutal and overlooked battles. For 23 days, a small force of U.S. paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division held their ground against waves of North Vietnamese troops surrounding the base.

Cut off, outnumbered, and under constant artillery and mortar fire, the men of Firebase Ripcord fought desperately to survive. Helicopters were shot down trying to deliver supplies. Medics worked in the open. And when evacuation finally came, the sky was burning.
