How to Install Polyurethane Shifter Cable Bushings on a 2000 Toyota Celica GT.

Описание к видео How to Install Polyurethane Shifter Cable Bushings on a 2000 Toyota Celica GT.

My shifter (being 24 y.o.) had a lot of play in it. I was able to shift into each gear correctly, but every now and then I'd have trouble getting into Reverse or 1st Gear.

I was looking around for a solution for the issue. Solution 1 being a Short Shifter, which can be bought from a lot of places. Solution 2 being the Shifter Cable Bushings. There were some metal options for this, but I didn't go with those because people had trouble taking them off in the past when doing some transmission service. I was shown someone cutting them off, destroying them in the process because they were badly seized on the the transmission linkage, even with the provided grease.

After that, I was told about Brooks Racing Development, a small company in the UK that makes customs hardware for certain cars, more details on their website: https://www.brooks-brd.co.uk/index.html

But one of their products includes shifter cable bushings for the 7th generation of celica's, but made out of polyurethane. I won't go into the specifics on what polyurethane is (it's a question for google), but I will say that they will not seize or rust weld on to the transmission if I ever choose to take them off.

The installation process was very easy for me as the previous owner of my car had replaced the clutch. The main difficulty of replacing these is that if they haven't been touched in 10+ or 15+ years, the metal pieces on the inner part can get stuck to the transmission via rust or seizing. Others on YouTube who have recorded their process have used dremel's or nut splitters to remove them. I bought a nut splitter just for this job, but I found myself not needing to use it.

The difference visually on the shifter is like night and day. There is still a little bit of play in it, but that's because of age. I'd say the new bushings got rid of 80% or more of the play in the shifter. If I really wanted to go further, I could throw a Short Throw Shifter in there with new bushings, but I don't need that much trouble for something that isn't an issue.

This shifting feels way different on the other hand. It feels like I'm moving a rock instead of a pillow. It is a little hard to describe, but it definitely feels more consistent than the rubber bushings.

Go follow my Instagram where I've posted everything I've done to my car ever since I got it. It is also where I post the smaller stuff.
