It's a bit of a generalisation, sure, but surfers seem to be happier than everybody else. If you think about the stereotype of a surfer, it's that fun, excited, playful guy or gal running down the beach with a big smile on his or her face.

That's not to say that other people aren't happy, either.

Surfing, of course, has it's ups and downs. And it can be a bit of a burden at times, however when we analyse the science of FLOW STATE and how it impacts mental & emotional health, it's no surprise that surfing comes with a long list of positive side effects.

According to Harvard Med, Flow experiences occur when there is a balance between the challenge of an activity and the skill you have in performing it. And the benefits of FLOW STATES can last for up to 3 days after experiencing it. I think surfing & flow go hand in hand.

These are my observations, tied in with some neuroscience, about surfing and just what part of the sport might be contributing such happiness and purpose to all those involved.

Yes, we know we're generalising here, and there are exceptions to the rule, and if that's you, speak with someone you trust about getting some help :)
