Telstar I was the world’s first active orbiting communications satellite.

Weighing 171 pounds it featured 3,600 solar cells for power as well as a new traveling-wave tube for generating the radio signals. Launched in 1962, it facilitated over 400 telephone, facsimile and television transmissions.
