Dr. Spadaccini, Curatorial Assistant to the Keeper of Drawings and Prints at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, discusses the Ambrosiana’s collection of more than 8,000 drawings and its online database, one of the first ever made, how it works from the inside, and how it has improved over the last few years. Her talk encompasses the noteworthy exhibition she curated, Leonardo da Vinci and His Legacy: Artists and Techniques, which presented 30 original drawings by Leonardo and his circle revealing the profound resonance that Leonardo’s teaching in the field of drawing had on his students, his followers, and Lombard artists of the time, thanks to the innovations that the Florentine genius introduced. Dr. Spadaccini’s talk focuses on a selection of drawings from this exhibition and the noninvasive analyses they made on them using XRF mapping, UV, and infrared spectroscopy demonstrating how these techniques can support art-historical research and how art historical research informs technical analyses to create new knowledge.

Benedetta Spadaccini (Ph.D, Università Ca’ Foscari, Venezia) has been Curatorial Assistant to the Keeper of Drawings and Prints at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan since 2010. In 2012, she received the Bromberg Fellowship at the British Museum. In 2013, she became the first woman and youngest person to be nominated Dottore Aggregato (auxiliary board member) of the Ambrosiana with the curatorial responsibility of maintaining its collection of over 22,000 prints and 8.000 drawings. She has also curated exhibitions at the Ambrosiana, including Leonardo da Vinci e il suo lascito: gli artisti e le tecniche in 2019, and has written numerous exhibition catalogue entries for drawings and prints, including, more recently, Master, Pupil, Follower: 16th- to 18th -Century Italian Works on Paper (2019-2020) at the Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, Athens.
