The Beauty of Attabad Lake – Hunza Nagar, Pakistan

Attabad Lake in Pakistan is a stunning result of a natural disaster.

Story of Attabad Lake
This dazzlingly turquoise mountain lake was created in the wake of a natural disaster.
Attabad Lake is a lake located in the Gojal region of Hunza Valley in Gilgit−Baltistan, Pakistan. It was created in January 2010 as the result of a major landslide in Attabad. The lake has become one of the biggest tourist attractions in Gilgit−Baltistan, offering activities like boating, jet-skiing, fishing, and other recreational activities.

A look at the clear blue colors of this stunning lake will make you feel like you are living in a poet’s dream. What adds to the lake's natural beauty are the peaks of the Karakoram mountain range surrounding the region.

In 2010, the village of Attabad in the Hunza Valley (about 760 km away from Islamabad) was hit by a huge landslide, which was probably created by an earthquake. Reportedly, boulders from the mountains around came crashing down and destroyed the village. Along with Attabad, four other villages, namely Ainabad, Shishkat, Gulmit, and Gulkin, were also completely destroyed. Around 20 people were reported d e a d, and more than 6000 villagers became homeless. They were stranded for days during this period.

The flow of the Hunza river was obstructed for about five months because of the landslide. This gave birth to a new lake altogether; soon, water reached over 21 km with a depth of over 100 m (330 ft). The water began flowing over the landslide dam in no time, and more than 170 houses and 120 shops were flooded.

Months later, it became a full-fledged lake flowing along the narrow valley. Though it was created by a disaster, one can’t ignore the spectacular beauty it’s blessed with. The valleys of Gilgit and Hunza are already sprinkled with myriad pretty blue mountain lakes, which has only added to the region's beauty.

Ten years later, now Attabad Lake is the reason for people’s livelihood in the region. Soon after the tragedy, the lake started witnessing a massive flow of tourists, which gave birth to small hotels and guesthouses.

Attabad Lake is about half an hour east of Karimabad, the capital of the Hunza District in the Gilgit-Baltistan province of Pakistan (Karimabad, incidentally, was named one of the five "Best Tourist Sites" in Pakistan by The Guardian). If you arrive independently, you can arrange trips on the lake with local guides or to Karimabad. Most boat trips tend to last at least an hour. Alternatively, you can organize five-day tours from Islamabad, including the Hunza Valley, Attabad Lake, and the Pakistan-China border region.
