HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically targeting CD4 cells (T cells), which are crucial for the body's ability to fight off infections. HIV weakens the immune system over time, making the body more susceptible to infections and certain cancers. If left untreated, HIV can progress to a more advanced stage called Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is characterized by severe immune deficiency and opportunistic infections.

HIV is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles or syringes, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. It is important to get tested for HIV regularly, practice safe sex, and avoid sharing needles to reduce the risk of infection. With early diagnosis and access to proper medical care, people living with HIV can lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

Currently, there is no cure for HIV. However, there are highly effective treatments available that can help people with HIV live long and healthy lives. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the standard treatment for HIV and works by preventing the virus from replicating in the body. With proper adherence to ART medications, people with HIV can achieve viral suppression, meaning the virus is undetectable in their blood and they are not at risk of transmitting the virus to others. While there is no cure for HIV at this time, ongoing research is being conducted in the hopes of finding a cure in the future.

The symptoms of HIV can vary from person to person and may not be present at all in some individuals, especially in the early stages of infection. Symptoms of HIV infection typically occur within 2 to 4 weeks after exposure and may resemble those of the flu or other viral illnesses. Common symptoms of acute HIV infection can include:

1. Fever
2. Fatigue
3. Swollen lymph nodes
4. Sore throat
5. Rash
6. Muscle and joint aches
7. Headache

As the virus progresses and the immune system is weakened, more severe symptoms may develop, including:

1. Rapid weight loss
2. Recurring fever or night sweats
3. Chronic diarrhea
4. Persistent cough
5. Shortness of breath
6. Skin rashes or sores
7. Recurrent infections
