Anticipatory Actions to mitigate the impact of floods in the Sahel

In 2022, West Africa experienced some of the worst flooding on record. Millions lost their homes. Thousands lost their lives. The heavy rainfall destroyed crops on close to three million hectares of farmland and killed more than one million head of livestock in six countries alone. To reduce the expected impacts before disaster could strike, FAO stepped in. It deployed funds contributed by the German Federal Foreign Office to its Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) Anticipatory Action window. FAO implemented immediate anticipatory actions in Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Chad to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable from the predicted flooding.
