STORYLINE:
Gunmen ambushed a bus carrying Shiite pilgrims marking Ashoura on Tuesday, killing at least seven people and wounding seven, police said.
The armed men drove by the bus in two cars and opened fire on the occupants, then sped away, police said.
The attack occurred about 1030 am (0730GMT).
''While pilgrims were coming from Karbala after commemorating Ashoura, the death of Imam Hussein, gunmen attacked them in Dora neighbourhood near a petrol station killing a number of them and this is their car'', said a witness.
Police said the pilgrims were heading to Kazimiyah, a neighbourhood north of the capital, which is home to the most important Shiite mosque in Baghdad.
The ambush was the latest in a series of attacks against Shiites ahead of Ashoura, a commemoration of the 7th-century death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
It also came one day after authorities said they killed the leader of a heavily armed cult of messianic Shiites intent on targeting pilgrims in the holy city of Najaf.
