Whether you’re just getting started, or a veteran at writing poetry, it’s always good to refresh ourselves on the fundamentals and basics. If you’re here because you want to take the craft of writing poetry seriously, it’s important to learn about the things you shouldn’t be doing just as much as it is to learn the things you should be.
Don’t over edit
One of the most important things in writing poetry is making sure you edit your poetry, however there are times when one can go overboard, and feel insecure or anxious about finishing our poems that we end up editing over, and over, AND OVER, until eventually the raw emotion and soul of the poem goes totally MIA.
2. Title your poems
A huge pitfall with my work is that so many titles are missing, and if you’re just starting out and only read modern collection you’re probably thinking, well… nobody else uses titles. Please, be sure to title your poems, you’ll be surprised at how far they go.
3. Not reading other poetry widely
A BIG and COMMON mistake comes in the form of not taking the time to read other poet’s work. Read plenty, read widely. Even if you know it is a collection you won’t like, give it a go. This is so important so that you can determine where you’re place in the poetry world lies, and this is how you are going to find your style and voice.
4. Don’t force the rhyme
As you know, I’m a rare breed of poet who advocates the use of rhyme in contemporary poetry. BUT, that’s not to say that you have to FORCE a rhyme if it cannot come naturally. If after careful consideration you deem that a sentence would be served better by using a word that doesn’t necessarily rhyme where it should, do not force a rhyme to the detriment of your poem. Of course if you’re writing in form, such as say a sonnet, then you do need to make sure you have those couplets… but perhaps consider rewording the first sentence rather than destroying the whole poem with an obviously below par and forced rhyme.
5. Having no purpose
There are times when a poem seems to just flow out of us and as poets we smiles, rub our hands together and tell ourselves, this isn’t so hard. Other times we have to sit down and map out our poetry. And even with the poems that just naturally come from within, even though you think it was a gift from the gods and nothing can possibly be wrong with it… it’s so important that we make sure each and every poem has a purpose. A reason for it to exist.
6. Taking writing poetry for granted
When starting out, it can be so easy to just dive straight in, and take for granted how much work actually goes into writing poetry. If this is you, don’t worry, we have ALL been there. The truth is, there’s more to writing poetry than many think. If you are able to write 3 poetry books in a year, I promise you, you are doing something wrong.
And that’s it for this video. I really hope that this was able to help you in some way, and that it took you just that little bit closer to your goal of becoming a masterful poet. If you have any thoughts, leave them in the comments down below, I do my best to reply to every comment within the first 24hours of upload so lets start a conversation!
