"Keep on the Sunny Side" was written in 1899. Ada Blenkhorn wrote the lyrics, while the music was composed by J. Howard Entwisle. Inspiration for the song came from Blenkhorn's nephew, who was disabled and always requested to be pushed down the ‘sunny side’ of the street in his wheelchair.
In 1928, the Carter Family’s recording popularized the song. A.P. Carter's uncle, a music teacher, introduced them to the song, which later became their signature tune on their radio show in the following years. A.P. Carter’s tombstone even features a gold record of "Keep on the Sunny Side."
In 1964, they released an album entitled "Keep on the Sunny Side," featuring special guest vocalist Johnny Cash.
In 2000, the Coen brothers used The Whites’ version of “Keep on the Sunny Side” on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack. (And we interviewed Tim Blake Nelson, who starred in the movie, for our “Film” episode. So, kind of a full circle moment.)
