this morning, at around 6am, i had received a very concerning email from unity. the email said as follows: "A security vulnerability was identified that affects games and applications built on Unity versions 2017.1 and later for Android, Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems. There is no evidence of any exploitation of the vulnerability, nor has there been any impact on users or customers. We have proactively provided fixes that address the vulnerability, and they are already available to all developers. The vulnerability was responsibly reported by the security researcher RyotaK, and we thank him for working with us."
curious as to what this issue was, and deeply disturbed, i looked up the vulnerability and found a article on GMO Flatt Security written by RyotaK describing the issue. the article states as follows: "A vulnerability was identified in the Unity Runtime’s intent handling process for Unity games and applications. This vulnerability allows malicious intents to control command line arguments passed to Unity applications, enabling attackers to load arbitrary shared libraries (.so files) and execute malicious code, depending on the platform."
or in other words, this exploit can manipulate your runtime and use yours app to launch malicious code. this is obviously very dangerous, and it's insane that this has gone virtually undetected since 2017.
so what do you do about this exploit? unity's email states you should take different precautions depending on platform. however the general consensus is to install the patch and recompile/republish your app.
