বক্সারের যুদ্ধ: মিরকাশিম (১৭৬০-৬৩ খ্রি.) ছিলেন স্বাধীনচেতা নবাব—
ইংরেজদের হাতের পুতুল নয়। সিংহাসনে বসে কোম্পানির সঙ্গে চুক্তিমতো সব প্রাপ্য মিটিয়ে
দিয়ে তিনি রাজ্যের পুনর্গঠনে মনোনিবেশ করেন। এ সময় কোম্পানির কর্মচারীরা দস্তকের
অপব্যবহার ক’রে বাংলায় বিনা শুল্কে বাণিজ্য করত। এতে নবাব ও দেশীয় বণিকরা ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত
হত। নবাব এ ব্যাপারে বারংবার প্রতিবাদ জানান, কিন্তু তাতে কোনো সুফল হয়নি। এই কারণে
নবাব দেশীয় বণিকদের ওপর থেকেও বাণিজ্য শুল্ক তুলে দেন। এটা ইংরেজ বণিকদের পক্ষে।
মেনে নেওয়া সম্ভব ছিল না। এর ফলে দুপক্ষে যুদ্ধ শুরু হয়। কাটোয়া, গিরিয়া ও উদয়নালা
পর পর তিনটি যুদ্ধে পরাজিত হয়ে মিরকাশিম অযোধ্যায় পলায়ন করেন। তারপর অযোধ্যার
নবাব সুজা-উদ্ দৌলা ও দিল্লির বাদশা দ্বিতীয় শাহ আলমের সঙ্গে মিলিত হয়ে তিনি
ইংরেজদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধযাত্রা করেন। ১৭৬৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দে বক্সারের যুদ্ধে এই সম্মিলিত বাহিনী
পরাজিত হয়। ভারতে ইংরেজ সাম্রাজ্য বিস্তারের ইতিহাসে পলাশির যুদ্ধ অপেক্ষা বক্সারের
যুদ্ধের গুরুত্ব অনেক বেশি। পলাশির যুদ্ধে ইংরেজদের যে প্রভুত্বলাভ হয়, বক্সারের যুদ্ধে তা
সুপ্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। বক্সারের যুদ্ধের ফলে বাংলায় ইংরেজ শাসন প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়, নবাব কোম্পানির
হাতের পুতুলে পরিণত হন। বাংলার বুকে কোম্পানির যথেচ্ছ লুণ্ঠন শুরু হয় এবং অযোধ্যার
নবাব কোম্পানির অনুগত মিত্র ও মোগল সম্রাট কোম্পানির বৃত্তিভোগীতে পরিণত হন। এক
কথায়, এর ফলে উত্তর ভারতে কোম্পানির আধিপত্য প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রথম সোপান রচিত হয়।
