Five years of conflict, five years of EU assistance

The conflict in Syria has been raging for five years and has triggered the world's largest humanitarian crisis since World War II. Inside Syria, millions of people are in need of urgent support, such as medical and food assistance, water and shelter. The health system is collapsing, and the security situation is preventing aid workers from reaching those who are trapped by the fighting and who are in great need. Over 4.5 million Syrians have fled the conflict to the neighbouring countries of Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. The continuous flow of Syrians seeking safety there is putting enormous strain on these countries.

The EU and its Member States collectively are one of the main leaders of the international response. More than €5 billion have been mobilised for relief and recovery assistance to Syrians inside Syria, and to refugees and their host communities in neighbouring countries, with an additional €3 billion pledged at the international conference on Syria in February.

Humanitarian organisations supported by the EU are working tirelessly to address the essential needs of the most vulnerable, in particular women, children, the elderly, and those with disabilities. Our humanitarian partners support people in need, for example, by distributing food, providing access to health services, safe drinking water and hygiene, emergency shelters, and cash assistance. They also provide legal assistance and psycho-social support.
