The Inspired Mission of the Arts & Healing Resiliency Center is to Honor & Practice the Caring Art of Human Connection.

"Bird That Wants To Fly" emerged from an arts and healing workshop at TAAM. The story written by Diane Kaufman, MD for her own healing, became an illustrated story book, and then miraculously became a children's opera composed by Michael Raphael, performed by Trilogy: An Opera Company, and narrated by the actor, Danny Glover. "Bird That Wants To Fly" has also received funding by the Oregon Regional Arts and Culture Council to be transformed into a family friendly musical puppet performance by the puppeteer Kris Woolen.

In this Special Event, the TAAM co-founders art therapist Stephanie Wise and licensed creative arts therapist Emily Nash will discuss their unique approach to the creative healing process and the story's author will describe her experiences at the TAAM workshop that led to the creation of the story. We will watch the "Bird That Wants To Fly" opera which brings together through the expressive arts a story of trauma, healing, and resilience. This will be followed by an open discussion and reflection upon creativity, healing, and the imagination's contribution to mental health well-being.

The Therapeutic Art Alliance Manhattan (TAAM) was born from the belief that the integration of the creative arts within the context of a relational healing environment, best supports the optimal environment for overcoming the impact of trauma. The re-igniting of imagination through right brain activities, bypasses typical intellectual censoring that as humans, we are prone to do. Instead, the activation of the creative spirit opens possibilities for transformation of habitual narratives about “what happened to us” into new resilient options of ways to build anew and even flourish.
Emily Nash and Stephanie Wise, authors of the book, Healing Trauma in Group Settings, have worked together for over 15 years embracing the use of multiple art forms combined with psychotherapy in the pursuit of relational healing through creative engagement. TAAM became a comprehensive opportunity for other mental health professionals to safely explore their own traumas with imagination and metaphor guiding the journeys of exploration. They will share some of their philosophy and work with the audience today.
