Except in the coldest arctic areas. Approximately 250 species have been described so far. Most of the species are found in the Afrotropical region (91 species), over 48 species are in the Oriental region, 43 species are Neotropical, 24 species are Australasian and 20 species are Palaearctic. Brady (1964) listed 14 species from North America

Members of family Oxyopidae are spiny legged hunting spiders which are capable of running very fast and jumping on their prey like a wild cat. Hence, they have got the name lynx spiders. Eight eyes arranged in hexagonal shape with wide clypeus and prominent spines on the legs are the general identifying features of this family.

Lynx spiders are the members of the family Oxyopidae. They all are hunting spiders that spend their lives on plants, flowers and shrubs. At least one species has been identified as exhibiting social behaviour.
Some occupy flowers and wait for pollinating insects, whereas others lie in wait on plant stalks or bark. Oxyopidae in general rely on keen eyesight in stalking, chasing, or ambushing prey, and also in avoiding enemies. Six of their eight eyes are arranged in a hexagon-like pattern, a characteristic that identifies them as members of the family Oxyopidae. The other two eyes are smaller and generally situated in front and below the other six.
The Oxyopidae also have spiny legs, and in many species those legs, augmented by the spines, seem to be used as a sort of catching-basket in trapping flying insects.

The Lynx Spider....Oxyopes sp., Oxyopidae
They are easily recognizable by the six larger eyes arranged hexagonally on top of the head...

Pedipalps... Male spiders use pedipalps for mating. The male spiders make some silk, put sperm onto the silk, and then put their pedipalps into the sperm. The pedipalps then hold the sperm, and the spider can use it to mate with a female by putting them inside her epigynum.

HabitatOxyopes spp. are diurnal hunting spiders that build no webs. In the tropics these oxyopids are abundant in rice ecosystems: in crops planted before and after rice such as maize, cotton, soyabeans, mung beans, pigeon peas, sorghum, wheat, sweet potatoes and vegetables. Similarly, they abound in orchards and plantation crops.Life CycleThe females guard their egg cocoons, which are white to light brown, globular or roughly oblong and fastened on dried leaves or flowers of grasses. Individual egg cocoons may contain 68-120 eggs that hatch in 1.5 weeks. Newly hatched spiderlings remain inside the cocoon for 5-8 days before dispersing. Males reach maturity in 182 days, passing through ten instars, whereas females may mature in 226 days after 13 instars. PreyThe prey composition of Oxyopes in cotton fields comprises 46 species of insects: 23 species of Hemiptera, nine species of Lepidoptera, seven species of Diptera, three Orthoptera, two Coleoptera and a species each of Thysanoptera and Neuroptera (Young and Lockley, 1985; Lockley and Young, 1986). Oxyopes was also observed feeding on lepidopteran larvae (McCarty et al., 1980) and on Nezara (Stam, 1978) attacking soyabeans. In tropical rice, the diet of Oxyopes includes leafhoppers and planthoppers, whorl maggot flies, moths of leaf folders, caseworm and stem borers

Oxyopes pandaeIn India, this spider is an important mortality factor for the maize stalk borer, Chilo partellus (Sharma and Sarup, 1979).Oxyopes spp. (O. javanus, O. lineatipes and Oxyopes sp.) played a significant role in the reduction of rice insect pests, namely, stem borer and leaf folder moths, leafhoppers and rice bug nymphs

The spiders of the genus Oxyopes have the potential to reduce insect pest populations in agricultural fields, so they can be exploited as bio-control agent of insect pests. Moreover, their venom is of much medical importance including the blocking of calcium ion channels

Physical Characteristics:
Spiked Body: Lynx spiders often have spiky bristles on their bodies, which serve multiple purposes. These spikes help camouflage the spider among vegetation, providing it with better concealment from predators and prey. Additionally, the spikes may deter larger predators or act as a defense mechanism against potential threats.
Pedipalps: The pedipalps are a pair of leg-like appendages located near the spider's mouthparts. In Lynx spiders, the pedipalps are modified into specialized structures used for sensory perception and manipulating prey. They play a crucial role in prey capture and feeding.
