Industrial Metaverse | BCG’s Partner Dr. Tilman Buchner’s State of the Nation at Hannover Messe 2023

At the AWS booth during Hannover Messe 23, our BCG Partner Dr. Tilman Buchner demonstrated an impressive visual quality inspection station.

In this video, you'll see how the custom-built solution utilizes synthetic data generation and photorealistic rendering to enable visual quality inspection at the Start of Production (SOP). Nine steps were employed to achieve this, including utilizing Autodesk Fusion360/Netfabb, Maya, and VRED to generate over a thousand different photorealistic versions of quality defects. An AI pipeline trained with AWS Lookout for Vision was used to differentiate between good parts and scrap in under 90ms, and advanced classification was used to identify defect types and positions on the product.

But that's not all – the demo also showcases how to integrate this quality process into an industrial-grade automation solution using ifm sensors, Siemens S7-1200 for deterministic control, and CloudRail's industrial edge device to process IIoT data. AWS TwinMaker was used to build a Digital Twin of the mechatronic system, while SDA TechOps was used to maintain the PLC via TIA Portal in the Cloud.

The demo was completed within just six weeks with the support of outstanding partners, including Autodesk, Amazon Web Services (AWS), CloudRail, Siemens, Software Defined Automation, Werkzeugmaschinenlabor, WZL der RWTH Aachen, and ACAM Aachen Center for Additive Manufacturing GmbH.
