Although it shares a similar size with a domestic cat, this wild cat is built for survival in the wilderness. Its scientific name is Felis chaus. Which also known as Reed Cat or swamp cat.

The jungle cat’s coat color ranges from sandy yellow to tawny red, sometimes grey or brown, giving it perfect camouflage in forests, grasslands, and even near riverbanks. The tail is ringed with dark bands and ends in a black tip. Look closely, and you will notice their distinctive ears with black markings at the back.
When threatened, the jungle cat has a unique defense strategy—it arches its body, making itself look larger and more intimidating.

These cats are crepuscular, active during dawn and dusk, and occasionally nocturnal. Incredibly swift, strong, and bold, jungle cats are expert hunters. Their diet mainly consists of rodents, small mammals, birds, and even fruits.

Breeding season brings a gestation period of 50 to 63 days, with litter born in thick cover, safe from predators. Jungle cats can live up to 10-15 years in the wild.

Interestingly, jungle cats are not just limited to the forests—they can be found in the peripheral parts of cities and villages, often near riverbanks.

Sleek, adaptable, and bold—the jungle cat continues to thrive in the wild and near human settlements, making it one of India’s most fascinating felines.
