LEADIN:

Holy Week has begun for Orthodox Christians.

Serb families in Bosnia are celebrating the week before Easter with long-held traditions.

STORYLINE:

The Dimic children pick seasonal flowers in their backyard in Pale, near Sarajevo.

It's a typical start to Lazarus Saturday among the Bosnian Serb faithful.

The day marks the biblical story of when Jesus Christ raised Lazarus from the dead.

The girls' mother, Ivanka Dimic, says the church feast is particularly fun for younger members of the congregation.

“This feast brings special joy to children. Later, in church, there will be willow branches, which symbolize Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, which children will use later this evening to make crowns to wear on their heads on Palm Sunday," she explains.

The flowers the children collect now also play a role this weekend's traditions.

They are placed into a bowl of water for use the next day.
