Matthew 3:13-17

Sunday Morning: The Public Presentation of Jesus

Introduction: The ministry of Jesus parallelled and extended the ministry of John the Baptist (cf. Matt 3:2 and 4:17). Both began with repentance in light of the arrival of God’s Kingdom – His mercy for sinners and His judgment for the wicked.
The baptism of Jesus was the public introduction for His ministry. Jesus’ baptism was symbolic of His mission. It pointed toward the purpose of His redemptive work – His death, burial and resurrection (e.g., Rom 6:3-4).
It shows us the kind of Savior that sinners require.

1) The gospel requires a sinless Savior, v14.
John was a sinner. Jesus is the Righteous One. This is why John resisted and tried to insist that he could and should not baptize Jesus. He recognized his true spiritual condition (this is also why he confessed that he was unworthy to even carry the sandels of Jesus, something the lowest of slaves would do, 3:11). The “unblemished” lambs of the old sacrificial system represented the sinless One who alone could be our Savior (Ex 12:5; Heb 9;14-15; 10:12).

2) The gospel requires an obedient Savior, v15.
Jesus said that His baptism was “fitting to fulfill all righteousness”. “Fitting” means to be right in the eyes of God. “To fulfill all righteousness” means to do all that the Law of God requires. Jesus said that He “did not come to destroy the Law or the prophets . . . but to fulfill them” (Matt 5:17). Jesus’ baptism was His pledge to complete the Father’s plan of redemption.

3) The gospel requires a substitutionary Savior, v16.
Jesus didn’t receive baptism because He needed to repent. He was baptized because we need to. He was standing in for us – for whose sins He would die, be buried and rise again. The Holy One was a substitute for the unholy. His entire work of redemption was substitutionary. He opened heaven to us so the gift of the Spirit could be given to us (cf. Acts 2:38).

4) The gospel requires a divine Savior, vs17.
“The Son of God” is a title that means the divine, eternal Savior: co-equal and co-eternal with the Father (cf. Jn 1:1, 14, 18, 34). Jesus made Himself “equal with God” (Jn 5:18; 10:30, 33). The prophets foretold that God was coming to save them (Isa 35:4); He came in the person of Jesus Christ!
