Day one of practice for the Columbia River bass fishing tournament is in the books — and it got intense. With $18,000 on the line, we decided to launch at the Umatilla River to stay out of the brutal wind, but things quickly got out of hand. Despite being warned to avoid the main river, we pushed out anyway, hoping to find bass in protected sloughs and backwater areas.

The wind picked up fast, the whitecaps rolled in, and what started as a calm scouting trip turned into a borderline survival mission. I still managed to catch a bunch of smallmouth bass and got valuable insight for tournament day. Fishing from my Old Town Sportsman 106 PDL kayak and relying on my Humminbird Helix 7 to locate structure, this was a wild start to tournament week.
