It is generally said that Hokushin Ittō Ryū was the latest school created during the Bakumatsu Period (1853-1868) among hundreds of old martial traditions. It was devised by a genius swordsman, Chiba Shūsaku Narimasa, who was also known as one of the Bakumatsu Three Sword Saints.
After mastering the secrets of Ittō Ryū in Edo (Tokyo), Chiba visited famous dojos all over Japan practicing and polishing his swordsmanship against practitioners from various schools. The accumulated experience led him to devise forms that could not be defeated by any technique and which he later compiled into 43 fighting patterns. Chiba chose the name Hokushin for his Ittō Ryū style in homage of the Polar Star, which he regarded as a symbol of immutability. He opened a vast dojo at Otamagaike in the Kanda district of Edo, where he allegedly taught three thousand disciples. His school was very prosperous.

This is a poem from the Hokushin Ittō Ryū tradition:
“A chestnut carried away by the river’s streams
Abandon the fruit (body), it (you) will float
Come rain, hail, and snow, it will freeze; once melted, the water of the same river”

It means:
“Against any enemy , pressure him and pressure him again, face his strike and slash it down. Strike when he starts to move again.”
