The United States has played a crucial role in the Northern Ireland peace process for decades, especially since the appointment of Senator George Mitchell as Special Envoy and his chairing the negotiations that led to the historic April 1998 Good Friday Agreement. In recent months, the United States and the parties to the Agreement have been responding to violent incidents that risk derailing progress made over the past 18 years, including in the 2014 Stormont House Agreement and the 2015 Fresh Start Agreement. Northern Ireland will hold elections to its Assembly in May, and one month later the United Kingdom as a whole will vote on whether to remain a member state in the European Union. Our panel of three distinguished former Special Envoys will reflect on the current challenges and share the lessons they draw from their experiences leading U.S. engagement on Northern Ireland.
