Die Saarbahn (Mai 2023) – Von der Saarbrücker Innenstadt hinaus ins Umland

English see below – Kurzvorstellung der Saarbahn, des Stadtbahnsystems von Saarbrücken – Die Saarbahn ist die Stadtbahn der Stadt Saarbrücken. Als dieses Video aufgenommen wurde, im Jahr 2023, gab es eine Linie, die Linie 1 oder S1. Sie verkehrt von Lebach im Norden über Saarbrücken nach Sarreguemines im Süden. Allerdings befahren die Züge in der Regel nicht den gesamten Linienweg. Ähnlich wie in Karlsruhe fahren die Züge auf Eisenbahnstrecken weit ins Umland.
Daher setzt die Saarbahn Triebzüge des Typs Bombardier Flexity Link ein. Sie können sowohl mit Gleichstrom fahren als auch mit Wechselstrom von 15.000 Volt 16 2/3 Hz. Viele der Fahrzeuge tragen Ganzflächenwerbung.
Am Saarbrücker Hauptbahnhof gibt es für die Saarbahn 2 Gleise je Richtung auf dem Bahnhofsvorplatz. Im Normalbetrieb werden die inneren Gleise benutzt. Die Bahnsteige dort sind höher, an die Stadtbahnfahrzeuge angepasst, weil diese auch an den Bahnsteigen der DB-Strecken halten. Die niedrigeren Bahnsteige an den äußeren Gleisen werden überwiegend von Bussen benutzt.
Auch das Schienenprofil unterscheidet sich von dem anderer Straßenbahnen wie etwa in Leipzig. Die Spurkränze der Saarbrücker Fahrzeuge sind daran angepasst, dass die Züge auf DB-Strecken übergehen. Darum sind auch die Rillen der Schienen deutlich breiter als in Leipzig.
Weiter im Osten der Stadt, beim Römerkastell, fädelt sich die Stadtbahnstrecke in die DB-Strecke nach Sarreguemines (Frankreich) ein.
In Brebach halten die Züge am DB-Bahnsteig. Dort werden die Trittbretter ausgefahren (wie an den anderen DB-Bahnhöfen und Haltepunkten), um den Spalt zum Bahnsteig zu überbrücken. Neben dem Bahnhof liegt die Werkstatt der Saarbahn.
Westlich vom Hauptbahnhof an der Haltestelle Ludwigstraße gibt es hinter einer Kurve auch eine Verbindung zum DB-Netz. Sie wird aber zur Zeit nicht im Linienverkehr genutzt.

English subtitles available – Saarbahn is a light rail system for the city of Saarbrücken (federal state Saarland, Germany). When this video was recorded in 2023, one line was in operation, line 1 or S1. It runs from Lebach (northern terminus) via Saarbrücken to Sarreguemines (in France, southern terminus). Normally, trains do not run along the entire line. Like in Karlsruhe (Germany), trains go far into the surroundings of the city on railway lines. That's why Saarbahn uses Bombardier Flexity Link tram units. They can run with DC current as well as with AC 15.000 Volt 16 2/3 Hz. Many vehicles carry full surface advertising.
There are 2 tracks for each direction at Saarbrücken central station, at the place in front of the station. Normally the inner tracks are used. The platforms at the inner tracks are higher, adapted for the tram vehicles, as these also stop at platforms at the railway lines. The lower platforms at the outer tracks are mainly used by buses.
The rail profile differs from that of other tram systems (like in Leipzig, for example). The wheel flanges of Saarbrücken trams are designed in geometry for the use on railway lines. So the grooves of the tracks in Saarbrücken are wider than in Leipzig.
Further east in Saarbrücken, at the former Roman castle and army camp, the trams change over into the railway to Sarreguemines (France).
At Brebach trains stop at the normal railway platform of Deutsche Bahn (German railways). The trams have additional boards that move out to cover the gap between vehicle and platform. These boards can be used at all railway stations. The Saarbahn workshop is located at the side of Brebach station.
West of central station, at Ludwigstraße tram stop, another juntion provides a connection to the tracks of German railways. At present this connection is not used in regular scheduled service.
