Interview With Musician Amyt Dutta: Travelogue of A Journeyman

Tantra Foundation recently got the opportunity to take interview of Amyt Dutta (dearly Amyt da, or, Sir) legendary musician, composer and guitarist from Kolkata, India. A teacher who seeks perfection, with his absolutely no-nonsense attitude towards music, he has learned the art and is still learning as he says, the hard way which he can only express through his music, The Red Plant, album released during the waning period of pandemic, in Dec, 202, is, a must for all listeners of good music. From what he called "The Trunk", a handmade guitar made by his friend in the 60s, was all that he could put his hands on as a first time experience of strumming the chords....a magical journey with the band Shiva, a name that sets the rock n roll and blues music ablaze from Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Clapton, Bob Dylan, almost everything under the sun, from Floyd, Beatles to Jethro Tull, the scene was lit up by the band in mid 80s and early 90s, then the stint with Skinny Alley, where he really started delving in deeper forms and textures of sound, the magic happened as he insisted, by shamelessly asking questions about chords, patterns, shapes, and, progression to everyone he felt he could learn from, that resulted in an evolving music which has no end ...questioning he said as a teacher, in front of his students, who by themselves are accomplished guitarists, is the only learning tool he had while meandering the lanes and bylanes of music, whether it's about Bach or Beethoven or Stravinsky or Nikhil Banerjee or Dylans's complex yet apparently simple arrangements, this is a gift as an answer from him to the music lovers and learners across.. A wonderful person by heart, exclusive in his own way, he lets the guitar speak his mind, a thinking musician and a brilliant composer, he has no time other than playing and he will trade a chord or some musical understanding for anything in the world.....
