A photograph from the Gallantry Awards earlier this year went viral across India- a young wife and her mother in law receiving the Kirti Chakra on behalf of Captain Anshuman, a young soldier who gave his life for the country. "Love at first sight' was how Smriti described her relationship. Now an unseemly battle has broken out with the soldier's parents claiming that they have not even been 'able to touch the award'. Smriti has been silent through the controversy. As India mourns the lives lost in Jammu, Doda in a fresh terror attack- the sixth this year, these are controversies the Indian military can ill afford. Barkha Dutt speaks to Meghna Girish, who lost her son Major Akshay, in the line of duty, Maj General Yash Mor, and Brigadier Sandy Thapar.
