There was a set of “paradoxical commandments” on the wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children in Calcutta:

“People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway...”

Perhaps we could add another such commandment: “We may never have absolute certainty when making a decision. Decide anyway.”

Mother Teresa often did not have certainty. But she decided anyway. She trusted in God.

We still need to do the work of discernment. We need to look for many data points from God that paint a picture.

Still, that picture may look more like an impressionist painting than a photo taken on the latest iPhone.

We rarely have absolute certainty. Decide anyway.
