The International Olympic Committee (IOC) refused on Wednesday to comment on the arrest the previous day of two members of Pussy Riot.
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina were detained for a few hours in Sochi, the host city of the Winter Olympics, on Tuesday.
The two members of the Russian punk group were released from a Sochi police station a few hours later, with cameras out in force to record the curious sight of the women running down the street wearing bright dresses and with colourful face masks concealing their identities.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters at a regular news conference on Wednesday that their arrest "wasn't in the context of any protest against the Games, as far as I understand."
Adams also described the violence in Ukraine as "terrible."
"I am not sure that the Olympic truce is an important symbolic thing for us. I am not sure really that it plays much part in what's going on there. But clearly we hope that that situation will be solved as quickly and with less bloodshed as possible," he continued.
