The Material Requirements Planning, or MRP, is a set of planning techniques that considers existing inventory levels as well as past, present, and future demand and supply of inventory to calculate when inventory needs to be procured or produced.

Factors such as minimum order quantities, order intervals, and lead times are all considered to ensure procurement documents are released at the optimal time.

The output of an MRP run is a set of recommendations to reorder inventory or produce materials, as well as alerts about materials that will be past due.
Based on the results of an MRP run, the arrival of materials can be accelerated and delays in production can be accommodated through schedule changes.
