April update

A catch up on all the scenic work that’s been happening ‪@HighFell‬ The area East of Twizell Viaduct has been completed. Glebe Farm nestles below the 1865 stone viaduct across the valley at the end of Fell lane. It’s a hive of activity. The lawn mower is ready to cut the front lawn, the vegetable garden at the rear is cropping new potatoes, Gooseberries are getting fat along the wall and it could be a good harvest of pears from the tree clinging to the wall of the farmhouse. Farming is never easy and a puncture on a trailer tyre is not welcome! The farm spaniel has managed to discover something tasty to investigate in the bin while everyone is busy. Further up the lane is Paradise Cottage, it’s washing day and the sheets are out, but there’s time for tea and a chat as a friend visits. St Anne’s church sits higher up the lane. The area has long been linked to mystical goings on, the mound in the church grounds is rumoured to be a Viking Burial ground and various Viking artefacts have been discovered in Cragg Edge overlooking the cutting. Since the New Line went in, the simple crossing linking High Fell to Fell lane has been upgraded to a gated level crossing although the historic status of Cragg Edge prevented BR widening the cutting to take double tracks. It does make for interesting spotting though as the forced bottle neck means there is always something to see.
